Reliant Supports The Salvation Army of McAllen with $10,000 Donation for the Rio Grande Valley Recovery Effort

05/13/2021

Funds will help the region’s disaster preparedness and emergency response

HOUSTON – May 13, 2021 – National Salvation Army Week is a time dedicated to drawing attention to the crucial services the nonprofit provides to communities across the country. In recognition of this important work, Reliant is donating $10,000 to the Salvation Army of McAllen to support the nonprofit’s continuing role in the region’s ongoing recovery as well as its vital disaster preparedness and response services.

“The Salvation Army continues to make a big impact in communities across the U.S. and plays a key role in McAllen’s disaster response,” said Elizabeth Killinger, president of Reliant. “As a company, we’re committed to helping our communities prepare for and recover from natural disasters by providing relief and assistance to those in need. We are honored to make this donation to help further the organization’s mission and services in the Rio Grande Valley.”

Reliant’s donation will fund on-site repairs of damage suffered during the winter storm, including maintenance at the main office, windows, furniture, modifications to make the site more accessible to people with disabilities, and other resources to make the shelter safer for the community during future events.

During Winter Storm Uri, The Salvation Army of McAllen, the area’s sole shelter in the county, helped house 288 community members, providing food, water and a warm place to sleep. Over a weeklong period, the dedicated team served nearly 12,000 hot meals to neighbors as they navigated the devastating impacts of the storm.

“As the primary shelter during inclement weather and disaster response in Hidalgo County, we need to be prepared for all types of unexpected events, from hurricanes to winter storms. Thanks to Reliant, we will be able to enhance our disaster preparedness efforts in the future and ensure that our community is protected when they need it most,” said Lieutenant Adolph Aguirre, administrator of The Salvation Army of McAllen.

Including today’s donation, Reliant and parent company NRG Energy, Inc. have made a $4 million commitment to Texas communities to address food and water shortages, temporary or damaged housing and the overall recovery effort from Winter Storm Uri.
